Solar Panels Comparison
There are now well over 100 solar panel brands approved by the Clean Energy Council for use under Australia’s federal rebate scheme. While choice is a good thing, it can also make comparisons confusing.
Solar panels are the most visible and longest-lasting part of a solar system, so choosing the right type and brand matters. This page explains how solar panels work, the main panel types used in Australia, and what to look for when comparing options.
How Do Solar Panels Work?
Solar panels generate electricity by converting sunlight into usable power through photovoltaic (PV) cells. These cells are typically made from silicon. When sunlight hits the cell surface, it causes electrons to move, producing direct current (DC) electricity. This process is known as the photovoltaic effect.
The DC electricity produced by the panels is then converted into alternating current (AC) by a solar inverter so it can be used by your home.
Most residential solar panels installed in Australia contain between 54 and 78 individual solar cells. These cells are sealed under toughened glass, supported by a backing layer, and framed in aluminium to withstand outdoor conditions.
Common Types of Solar Panels
Most modern Australian homes install monocrystalline solar panels. These panels are made from a single silicon crystal and are known for good efficiency, strong performance in limited roof space, and a clean black appearance.
Polycrystalline panels are less common today. They are usually cheaper but slightly less efficient, meaning they require more roof space for the same output.
You may also see references to newer technologies such as half-cut cells, PERC cells or bifacial panels. These are refinements rather than completely different panel types and are now widely used across many brands.
Comparing Solar Panel Brands
CEC approval ensures panels meet minimum Australian standards, but it does not mean all panels are equal. Differences between brands can include:
- Power output and efficiency
- Product and performance warranties
- Manufacturer track record and financial stability
- Temperature performance in Australian conditions
Higher-priced panels are not always necessary, but extremely cheap panels often involve compromises in warranty strength or long-term reliability.
Getting Solar Panel Quotes
Getting a few solar panel quotes helps you understand pricing differences, recommended system sizes, and the warranties included with each option. When comparing quotes, system design and overall component quality matter more than brand names alone.
Solar Cost Guide allows you to compare solar panel options from accredited installers based on your roof, energy usage and budget, without pressure or sales tactics.
